Everybody Knows Somebody

"Everybody Knows Somebody"

That is the theory my future career is depending on and the one currently espoused by every career coach that dares call themselves that.

"Everybody Knows Somebody" who you should talk to
"Everybody Knows Somebody" who can help you
"Everybody Knows Somebody" who had a friend, and you know what?  That friend knows somebody.

My career coach said that the 6 degrees of separation made popular by Kevin Bacon (OK, not really, but he got picked) means that I will probably call about 256 people before I find the right connection to give me the right job.  I hope to the heavens that my number is smaller than that, 'cause I really don't like talking to people  Granted, if you are hot, funny, female, a bit on the sub side, available to my my time zone, a fan of Skype/chat/IM, and speak reasonable English, I'll talk to you in a heart beat, but I'm not so good with people in general.  I like to write, because you can't tell me I'm wrong without taking the bother to write back, which, by the looks of it, very few of you do.  Or, maybe I'm just never wrong.

Yesterday afternoon I had Starbuck's with a friend (and I know, again, that you can't "have a Starbucks" since "Starbucks" isn't a product you buy unless you count stocks) and he gave me 7 names, and those 7 names know hundreds of people.  My friend knows hundreds of people, but all I need are a few from each.  I need a few that know IT, that know projects, that know the value of a good middle man, who know that being over 40 is an asset and not a liability since no one is paying me to be handsome anymore.

Today, using LinkedIn, I got introduced to a woman in Dallas how works for the company that has a branch in my home town.  I got introduced by a friend and she wrote back and told me to call her tomorrow.  I don't know who she knows, but I know she new my friend and that she knows someone here in California who might either get me a job or point me to someone who knows somebody I should talk to.

Who do you know?

Non of this is sexy, i know, but I have to write about what's on my mind.  And besides seducing my wife's best friend for her birthday (the friend's birthday, not my wife's), I'm thinking mostly about job stuff these days.  In fact, this afternoon, I skipped over redtube in favor of LinkedIn for 4 hours.  Who thought that would happen?

That's good that something positive came out of LinkedIn. You never know, the woman might be a hottie!

I assume you're speaking metaphorically about seducing your wife's best friend? ;-)

I can't tell you how incredibly refreshing it is to hear about someone who is unemployed and actually doing something about it. So many of my recent post-grad friends are a similar boat and not putting in even 1/4th of the effort that you are.

I'm sure your hard work is going to pay off soon! Keep up the hunt.
