When I got a call back after 6-months of resume’s, networking, on-line submissions, bad coffee, and worse advice from people who already had jobs, I jumped at it.  Three rounds of interviews, a personality test, a background check, and a blood and urine test, I was in.  I was two levels and several thousand dollars below where I left, but the paychecks were steady and the commute was from my bedroom, now a room for one, to my office.

The management chain was pretty opaque since we were all remote, so I was surprised when the CIO called an all-hands, in-person meeting on Friday.  I showered, shaved, went to the dry cleaner, and arrived early.

“You’re the new guy,” the well-scrubbed assistant said, extending his hand, “glad you are early, Ms. K. likes to meet everyone.”

“Ms. K.?” I asked., “suddenly very nervous.”

He opened the door and ushered me in, closing and locking the door.

“Good to see you again Frank,” she stood on the conference room table like we fantasized about so many years before, “let’s finish what we almost started.”

It was almost 10 years since that day it “almost” happened.  I was to stupid and horny to realize she wasn’t feeling well, wasn’t in the mood and so that was that.  I blew my one chance.  She left the company not long after, I was laid off by June, and so our once torrid friendship was reduced to once-a-year Christmas cards that now came back as “undeliverable.”

“Hello Kara,” I almost choked on the words, “I, didn’t know it was you.”

“I know,” she said, slowly spreading her feet apart as she stood above me, “I don’t interfere with hiring very often, but I occasionally make exceptions.”

“Now,” she smiled, “let’s get me out of these laces.”

Nothing ever happened between us, not really, but oh, how I wanted it to.

Now she's a bigshot with a tech company, and yes, her Christmas card came back "Undeliverable."
